VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

You'll see plenty of orange barrels and you'll hear the sound of construction equipment if you drive down Williams Street during the day.

But those sites and sounds won't be around for very much longer, because the construction project is more than 70 percent complete.

"It's about 70 percent complete," said Jim Martinez, Valdosta's Engineering Project Manager. "Currently we're working from Drexel Park up to the Gordon intersection," Martinez continued.

The final stage of the project is scheduled to get underway in the next few weeks. Crews will begin work on the part of Williams Street between Brookwood Drive and Gordon Street.

All construction on Williams Street is expected to be completed by Christmas. The lanes will be narrower, which will likely cause drivers to slow down. Martinez said the construction will also increase drivers' viability though, and that makes it worth slowing down.

"Yeah, I mean the whole purpose of the Williams Street project is to do that; to slow down traffic, the vehicular traffic through the Williams Street corridor. It's an established neighborhood there and we want to provide them with a safe way to travel," Martinez said.

Martinez added that the project was motivated, in part, by residents in the area voicing their concerns for their safety along Williams Street, especially during football season when many people are walking along the street to and from nearby Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $900,000 and is being paid for by SPLOST 6 funds.
