Marines give holiday baskets to those in need

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Some marines gave a few Dougherty County students in need a tasty holiday surprise for overcoming adversity.

The Mentors in Action program gave out two Thanksgiving baskets to select families at Radium Springs Elementary and Southside Middle School Friday.

The school's teachers and administrators identified kids most in need who excel in their studies, and worked with the MCLB program to provide a 15 pound turkey and a basket full of holiday goodies.

The program partnered with the Albany State University Global Ambassadors to mentor some kids throughout the year. Organizers say the gifts offer encouragement to students for their personal and academic achievement.

"We believe that giving back just goes a long way," said Staff Sgt. Juana Snell, MCLB Equal Opportunity Advisor. "So when you're down and out and when you feel like nobody sees it, nobody understands it, nobody cares, we're here to let you know yes there are people who are taking notice, and we want to just give you a little of that holiday cheer."

Snell said the program is in it's second year, and is expanding. She said last year marines worked with one school, but this year they're working with three.

On Thursday, they gave a holiday basket and turkey to a family at the International Studies Elementary Charter School.

The Staff Sgt. Said 20 Marines and 10 ASU Global Ambassadors are mentoring kids in the few middle and elementary schools. She hopes to expand the program into some of the county's high schools next year.
