Council members react to no 24-hour protection for Dawson mayor

DAWSON, GA (WALB) -

The mayor of Dawson won't get around-the-clock protection from city police after being shot multiple times in an ambush in his home.

At a called meeting Thursday afternoon, the city council voted 4 to 2 against providing 24-hour security for Mayor Christopher Wright.

A few citizens told the council they worried their taxes would go up to pay for the 24 hour protection.

Council members John Harris and Artie Gardner say that's ridiculous, and the city has a responsibility to make sure the mayor is safe, at least for the first few days after he gets out of the hospital. Harris said, "This would have cost the city of Dawson five or ten thousand dollars. Five or ten thousand dollars at the most. Um, the way I look at. We owed him that. We owed him that."

Wright was shot multiple times on Halloween night. The GBI has not identified any suspects, and Wright's family worries he'll be targeted again.
