ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The mayor of Dalton kicked off his campaign at an Albany restaurant. David Pennington is running against Nathan Deal in the Republican primary for Governor.

Pennington says Georgia led the south in economic growth in the 80's and 90's and that Georgia has since lost its way.

He says being the only private businessman in this race makes him the best candidate to turn things around.

And says taxes have been cut almost 20% during his time as Mayor of Dalton.

"My family's been in Georgia since 1751, and we need to turn this state around and we can. We have wonderful resources and we need comprehensive tax reform now. We need to cut income tax from 6% to 4% and restore Georgia to its rightful place as the number one economic engine in the south," he said.  "I know I can do this."

Georgia School Superintendent John Barge is also trying to unseat Governor Deal.
