DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

An officer at the DeKalb County Detention Center has been arrested for stealing from a detainee.

Sheriff Jimmy Harris said that his office worked with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Office of Professional Responsibility after the ICE received a complaint from a detainee who said that $325 was missing from his property after being booked into the detention center.

John Weston Culpepper was arrested Wednesday following the results of that investigation. Culpepper was charged with third-degree theft of property. At the time of the incident, he was a corrections officer at the DeKalb County Detention Center.

Sheriff Harris confirmed that Culpepper was terminated from his position.

"Law enforcement officers hold the public's trust, and even though sometimes it is tough to do so, we must be held to the standards we enforce," Harris said.

Culpepper was booked into the DeKalb County Detention Center. His bond is $1,500.
