Military Matters: Santa's Castle on Fort Benning

FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

Volunteers have started collecting toys for the non-profit organization known as Santa's Castle in order to make Christmas a little brighter for the children of our men and women in uniform.

Thanksgiving is next week, and Christmas is not far behind.

"Last year we helped 291 families, 750 children," says Melissa Glasspoole, President of Santa's Castle. "Each one of those children walked away with about $125 worth of gifts."

Santa's Castle has been distributing toys of all varieties to thousands of children since 1986. The program is mostly designed for soldiers in the lower ranks who may be struggling financially.

"The families come, and they will shop the first week of December through us for the toys," says Glasspoole. "That leaves that fifteenth payday open for them to supplement anything that we don't give them, so that the kids have a good Christmas."

Volunteers have had help over the years. Police officers from Columbus State University made a significant donation last year.

You can also help by dropping off a donated toy. A special drop-off day will take place at Santa's Castle tomorrow, Nov. 21, 2013, from 5 to 7 p.m. You're asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy to building 2505 on Indianhead Rd on Fort Benning.
