CLINTON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Firefighters battled a blaze at a mill in Laurens County Wednesday after thousands of bags of wood chips caught fire.

FOX Carolina received an official alert about the fire at a mill on Shady Grove Road in Clinton about noon.

FOX Carolina crews at the scene said smoke was still pouring from the Carolina Shavings mill, which produces animal bedding products, according to their website.

An employee at the mill who was able to get out safely said they had about 8,000 bags of wood shavings collected. He said the mill dries the wood and had several dryers running when the fire broke out.

Witnesses at the scene said a few propane tanks exploded after the fire started too.

About five employees were in the building at the time of the fire and all were able to get out.

FOX Carolina was told that everyone was able to get out safely. Ten local fire stations responded to the blaze and were working to determine what might have sparked the fire.

Officials said they had to truck in water tankers because there were no hydrants close enough to the building.

Several people at the scene said this was not the first fire at the mill. A police officer said a smaller one broke out about a year ago and an employee said there was large fire about five years ago.

A FOX Carolina iWitness sent in photos of the flames, showing the roadway blocked to through traffic near the fire and the neighboring John Deere dealership.

As of 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday the fire is under control, fire officials said. They said they are continuing to watch it to make sure it doesn't flare up.
