School fines parent for 'unbalanced' lunch

Kristen Bartkiw of Manitoba was recently fined by her child's daycare because they supplemented a packed lunch that was considered "unbalanced," according to the blog, Weighty Matters.

The school's lunch policy derives from the Manitoba Government's Early Learning and Child Care lunch regulations, which state that a child's lunch is unbalanced if it does not conform to the proportions of food groups in Canada's Food Guide.

In that case, that child's lunch is "supplemented" and their parent is fined.

Kristen Bartkiw sent her children to daycare with lunches containing leftover homemade roast beef and potatoes, carrots, an orange and some milk. But she did not send along any "grains."

The school gave the kids supplemental Ritz Crackers, and fined her $10.

On her blogs Kristen that is she sent along lunches made of, "microwave Kraft Dinner and a hot dog, a package of fruit twists, a Cheestring, and a juice box" the schools would not have protested.

Does this sound crazy? Have you come across a school lunch policy that seemed strange or misguided? Let us know about it on the WMBF News Facebook fan page.
