WORTH CO., GA (WALB) -

The crime scene tape has been removed from around Wendell Newell's home, but the GBI is still investigating the home invasion.

The 79-year old was found unconscious inside the home on Woodcrest Road, just west of Sylvester, Monday morning. His neighbors are understandably upset.

"Its nerve wracking knowing its right next door. You know you think you live in a safe community but no where is really safe. Yes, its scary we have four children and I can't imagine anyone coming in on us," says Danielle McDonald, a neighbor.

Danielle McDonald says she and her husband noticed Newell's lights were on Sunday evening.

"But I didnt' think anything of it, and then the next day we found out that someone broke in took some things from his and beat him up pretty badly," she says.

Until the robber is caught, the sheriff is asking people to be careful.

"Right now just be cautious. When someone comes up to their door or knocks on their door just be cautious. Make sure you know who they are, and just don't let anyone in that you don't know," says McDonald.

Sheriff Jeff Hobby says home invasions are unusual in Worth County.

"Worth County is generally a pretty safe county. We've got pretty good residents and we just don't have that type of crime here anywhere."

In the meantime, residents say they'll be praying for Newell's recovery.

"We are praying for him and we want everyone else to be praying for him, and just pray for the community we live in," says McDonald.
