ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Marine Corps in Albany is being honored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The base is one of 2 federal facility's recognized by the EPA.

The commanding general of the Marine Corps Installations congratulated the energy team in person for earning the Energy Star.

He says the Albany base will be used as a model to show others how it is possible to reduce waste, save energy and increase production.

"We're at the forefront of renewable energy, and we're at the forefront of getting the most out of our resources and really giving back to the community," said General Robert Castellvi.

The General has challenged the base's original goal of becoming "net zero" by 2020 and is pushing to meet the standard instead by 2016.
