FITZGERALD, GA (WALB) -

On Friday, federal budget cuts will result in the cancellation of Friday meals at 18 South Georgia counties, including the Ben Hill Senior Citizen Center. Some say they depend on that meal.

"The thing that I appreciate the most is the one balanced meal a day," said center member Peggy Hulett. "The one balanced meal is what really carries me through."

For others, meeting during lunchtime is more about the food.

"It's a blessing to know you have somewhere to go every morning," said member Irene Paul.

"I really don't get to see people a lot, so I come over here for companionship," said center member Francis Crozier. "Just to be around people, it's gets me out the house everyday."

Another issue that arises with the withdrawing the Friday meals is that now some might go three days straight without being attended to.

"If you don't have family or anybody check on you, your by yourself," center director Cathy Posey said. "If they've fallen and we've gone and it has not been so pleasant."

Instead of a Friday home-delivered meal, the homebound will receive a boxed meal with their Thursday dish.
