ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Demolition of the old terminal at Southwest Georgia Regional Airport could begin in six weeks.

Airport officials expect city commissioners to vote Tuesday to approve a 3.5-million dollar contract for the final phase of the airport improvement project that includes tearing down the old terminal and building a new parking lot.

"My understanding is that the construction, or the final phase will begin in the beginning of January, and that is all pending on whether or not it is approved by city council," said Aviation Commissioner Keith Fletcher.

Initial bids for the project came in over budget, so the aviation commission had to remove items such as a covered walkway and some parking spaces from the plan.
