Commissioner: Watch groups help reduce crime

John Hayes, Dougherty County Commissioner John Hayes, Dougherty County Commissioner
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Dougherty County leaders say an increased community effort to fight crime has improved safety in the city and the county.

Commissioner John Hayes said the number of neighborhood watch associations has grown over the last few years. He said they're the eyes and ears of law enforcement.

And while police can't be on every corner, he said watches play an essential role in reducing criminal activity in communities.

"If you're not currently part of an active association, do so. Do so. It helps promote unity. Aside from all the other things we just mentioned, having a unified community makes a world of difference in so, so many ways," said John Hayes, Dougherty County Commissioner.

Hayes said he and Albany city commissioner Jon Howard created a program to recognize watch efforts and improve involvement. They'll hold the third honorary ceremony for the associations next Monday.
