POOLER, GA (WTOC) -

A local family is working hard to raise enough money to adopt a special needs child from overseas.

Christie and Raymundo Orta are trying raise between $30-40,000 to adopt Evan, a 2 year-old boy with Down Syndrome who lives in an orphanage in Eastern Europe. Evan was abandoned at one-month old and has been lying in a crib with little to no medical care, and no opportunity for education or therapy.

If evan is not adopted by the time he is 5 years old, he will be transferred to an adult institution where he will most likely survive around a year or two at the most. The Ortas say they feel it's their calling to save this child.

"It is something I do every day with my job, and i had always thought that it takes a special family to raise a child with a disability." said Christie Orta, Mother.

There will be a Zumba fundraiser on December 6th at the Tom Triplett Park in Pooler. The cost is a donation of $10. The event runs from 6-8pm.
