SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah Fire and SCMPD are on the scene of a structure fire on East Gwinnett St.

The fire broke out just after 8:00 inside a vacant home on the street.

Witnesses say that a homeless person would stay there, but that they saw the person leave before the fire started. There is no reason to believe that anyone was inside.

The house next door was in danger of catching fire, but did not. Police say they were able to prevent the fire from spreading.

"There was a boom and we just thought it was somebody drunk next door in that house falling down, but no. Then we saw the smoke, sparks and then the fire, almost immediately the house started scorching." said Sharon Greye, neighbor.

"The main structure that suffered damage, the damage was severe, the roof on the left side of the structure caved in, the whole interior is pretty much destroyed." said Mark Keller, Savannah Fire Public Information Officer.

The two adults next door will be staying with the Red Cross tonight until their house can be checked out for safety.

Fire investigators will return on Sunday to try to determine the cause of the fire.

A firefighter did suffer a knee injury, but is expected to be ok, no other injuries were reported.
