SUMTER COUNTY, GA -

Sumter County school board members will not call for a new election, even though a federal judge says an election should take place. A lawsuit delayed the school board election scheduled last year.

A few weeks ago, a judge ruled that a redistricting plan that cuts the number of board members from 9 to 7 is legal. Last night, Board members voted not to call an election because they want to keep 9 members. Now, they must decide whether to ask the legislature or a judge to redraw districts again.

"Basically the members of the school board want to have elections that are free and fair, not elections where you stack the deck and you call them fair elections. They just want free and fair elections," said Sumter School Board Attorney Maurice King.

The Attorney General's office has said the Sumter County Board of Elections can schedule a school board election if the school board hasn't called for one within 30 days of that Federal Court ruling.
