Steve Harvey Show selects Monroe principal

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Monroe High School Principal Vinson Davis is getting national recognition. He'll be in Chicago this week for a taping of the Steve Harvey Show which selected him as a finalist for its "Neighborhood Award."

Davis started working at Monroe High School in July. As principal, one of his main priorities has been changing the culture, making sure kids understand the importance of obtaining their high school diploma.

"We wanted our kids to know the importance of having a high school diploma and persevering, you know, seeing it through to the end," he said. "A lot of our students these days what the fast feedback. They want it quick. They want to be able to be recognized right now. You know but we are constantly having conversations and that's what it all breaks down to."

And that relationship gained national attention. Davis has been selected as a finalist for Steve Harvey's Neighborhood Award, given out to people nationwide for their good work in the community.

Maurice Gibson teaches Geometry at Monroe, and has known Davis since he was eight years old. First as a mentor, then as his 7th grade teacher, and now as a co-worker.

"He knows most of all the students by first name. He always has a smile on his face and has a great principle student relationship with everybody. I think its great for him and for Monroe because he has a big task to turn around Monroe."

Davis was shocked to hear about the nomination. " As educators we don't do this type of work for any type of recognition. We very are seldom given that type of national recognition and for Mr. Harvey to do something like that is quite notable for him and for other educators who don't get in this business to get recognition."

He leaves Wednesday for Chicago. Davis says he still doesn't know who nominated him. He says he'll keep working to make a difference at Monroe High School.
