ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

With nearly 100,000 people living in Dougherty County, its no wonder we see retail strips and plazas on almost every corner.

And with the city of Albany growing even faster, it has definitely grabbed the attention of big retail stores like Gander Mountain, a place those at the Economic Development Commission say will be a great addition to the local community and a way to bring in more visitors.

"From all the tenants at the Albany Mall to the other big box stores we have here, we find a lot of people drive to Albany to do their shopping."

The outdoor specialty store that sells firearms, hunting, and camping equipment will generate 85 new jobs.

"And some other small stores that have opened up as well, so its good to see this type of retail activity re-emerge in Albany," CEO of Albany-Dougherty EDC Ted Clem said.

He also says because the city is surrounded by rural communities it makes the county's trade area larger and the city stronger. For Albany resident Alvin Morman, it's the new things that roll into town that keeps him shopping.

"I just stopped by to see what they were selling. It seems to be a nice store by the size of it. This is my first time and I would really like to see what's going on," Morman said.

Morman wasn't the only one. Several people stopped by the store to take a peek at what they had on their shelves. Some say they are excited to start their holiday shopping there while others say they aren't sure what to expect. However, those at the EDC feel it will create a positive impact on the community.
