Sumter Co. school board elections still up in the air

AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

More than a year after Sumter County voters should have elected new school board members, it's still unclear when they'll get a chance to vote.

At a school board meeting Monday night, board members scheduled a vote for Thursday on how to proceed. Last week, a federal judge tossed out a lawsuit that put elections, scheduled last year, on hold.

The school board attorney says board members must decide whether to ask a judge or state lawmakers what to do next. Maurice King said, "I mean I don't know what we're going to decide on Thursday, but I guess what the board, what's going to have to do is the board is going to have to figure out how to recapture the elections that should have occurred in 2012."

The lawsuit claimed the school board did not properly redraw district lines based on the 2010 Census.

Judge Louise Sands ruled new case law made that lawsuit moot and said new districts approved by the General Assembly should be used. That district map cuts the number of board members from 9 to 7.
