NEWTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

The two people killed in a crash Sunday morning on I-20 in Newton County have been identified.

Passengers Tonya Curtis, 35, and Bruce Reeves, 19, were killed in the accident.

Investigators said a Chevrolet Sonic ran out of gas and stopped on the south shoulder of I-20 eastbound.

Driver Christian Martin, from Vermont, stopped to help and was preparing to go get gas for the stranded driver.

When Martin was leaving to get gas, his car was struck from behind by a Jeep Patriot driven by 28-year-old Kevin Poynter. The Jeep also side-swiped the stranded car, according to the incident report.

Four other passengers were taken to the Newton Medical after the accident.

Additional charges are pending the completion of the follow-up investigation that is being conducted by the Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.
