ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An Albany Dougherty Drug Unit agent who was part of a team executing a search warrant this morning was attacked and bitten by a pit bull dog.

The officer could not get loose from the dog, which was biting him in the rear thigh, and was forced to shoot and kill the dog to stop the attack.

About 9:50 this morning the dog bit ADDU agent Ben Persley on the upper thigh during a raid on a home in the 500 block of North Cleveland. Officials say the dog continued to attack Agent Persley, and he shot the dog once with his Glock .40 Caliber service pistol, killing the dog.

Officials say there were several children inside the home when the shooting occurred, but Agent Persley was the only person hurt. He was treated at the hospital and released.

"We got all these vests and helmets on and all this, because you just don't know what's on the other side of that door waiting on you.  That's the danger part of our job," said ADDU Commander Major Bill Berry.

Three people in the home were arrested. The residents, 32 year old Alexander Goines, his 26 year old wife Sandra Goines, and 27 year old John Brookins.

Drug Agent Persley will be placed on light duty while he recovers and Albany Police Internal Affairs investigates the shooting. Anytime an officer fires his gun, it is investigated.
