Legends not returning to Savannah

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The immediate future of Champions Tour golf in Savannah will be confirmed shortly when the Tour announces it will not be returning to Savannah for the 2014 season later Monday.

The Legends of Golf had been played at The Club at Savannah Harbor for 11 years, but the status of the event became uncertain when Liberty Mutual Insurance decided not to continue what had been the longest running sponsorship in golf. Attempts to find a new title sponsor were unsuccessful and the Tour has informed local organizers that if the Legends is played next year, it will be in a different location.

The Westin Savannah Harbor Resort, home to the Legends for 11 years, is interested in securing another Champions Tour event and hopes to return to the Tour schedule in 2015. Discussions are underway to host a professional senior event on Hutchinson Island next year, but it would not be sanctioned by the Champions Tour.

The Tour is also expected to announce whether the Legends will be part of its schedule next year and, if so, where it will be played.
