ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A colonoscopy is not on anyone's bucket list. But it could save your life. Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in the United States.

Without the screening you may never know you have it. When and if symptoms arise the cancer could already be in an advanced stage. Some warning signs may be heartburn, sudden weight loss, abdominal pain, or bleeding. But these symptoms could be related to something else.

Dr. Steven Yang is with Phoebe Gastroenterology Associates on Meredyth in Albany He says the state of the art facility makes the procedure easier on patients and if polyps are present removing them then and there is pretty simple. 90 percent of colorectal cancers are curable but screening is imperative for early detection. Dr Steven Young says most people should have their first screening at the age of 50. "At 50 years old you go for your colorectal screening for African Americans for whatever the reasons may be they're at a little bit of a higher risk so you would start screening those folks at 45 years old. Catching it early is extremely important. A lot of colorectal cancers arise from polyps and by removing the polyps the chance of developing cancer is negated."

Millions suffer from IBS and twice as many of those are women. But there is a big difference between Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. The symptoms may be similar, and IBS symptoms can mask themselves as so many other problems.

Listen to Dr. Yang's interview in its entirety to learn more about the symptoms, who is at risk, what is the difference between IBS, IBD, Crohn's disease.

To make an appointment call Phoebe Gastroenterology Associates at 229-312-0698.
