Lowndes Co. voters approve SPLOST referendum

Posted: Updated:
VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Valdosta and Lowndes County leaders have made the second time the charm for a special local option sales tax referendum they say is vital as 69 percent of voters approved the measure Tuesday.

Just one year ago voters defeated the referendum.

Now passed, the biggest chunk of the money will pay to relocate Valdosta's troubled wastewater treatment plant.

They're under an order from the federal government to build a new plant after numerous large sewage spills during heavy rain.

Valdosta's share of the revenue is expected to be 80-million-dollars over the next 6 years if the referendum passes. More than $50 million of that would go toward water and sewer improvements.
