Man sentenced to 28 years for Mt. Pleasant Pizza Hut robbery

MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) -

A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to 28 years in prison after he was found guilty of an armed robbery at a Mount Pleasant Pizza Hut.

On Friday, a jury found Kenneth Ordell Murray guilty of armed robbery. Court officials say Murray has previous convictions of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, distribution of cocaine and malicious injury to personal property.

Murray's armed robbery charge stems from an incident on July 22, 2011 when authorities say he and his accomplice, Cleveland Clarence Major, robbed the Pizza Hut on 2161 US 17.

Assistant Solicitor Alexander Ziegler said Murray jumped over the counter of the restaurant and pointed a gun, which was later discovered to be a BB gun, at three employees before taking money from the cash register.

Murray confessed to the crime to police 10 days after the incident. The BB gun used in the crime was recovered in Murray's home.

"Justice was done for three hard-working Pizza Hut employees whose routine Friday night turned into a traumatic experience," Ziegler said."While the gun turned out to be fake, the fear they felt that night was very real."

The solicitor's office says Murray also faces armed robbery and kidnapping charges in connection to a 2011 robbery at a Piggly Wiggly in Mt. Pleasant.
