NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A man accused of second degree murder pleaded guilty in court Monday to the death of a tow truck driver in 2012.

Anthony Thompson was charged in 2012 for the death of John Colville, an employee of Wayne's Towing who was helping someone change a tire along Carolina Beach Road.

He also plead guilty to habitually impaired driving and fleeing the scene.

According to prior reports, troopers said Thompson kept driving after he hit Colville until he was stopped nine miles past the accident, near Legion Stadium.

According to officials, Thompson had a blood alcohol content of .26 more than two hours after the crash.

Thompson was sentenced Monday to 19-24 years in prison.

Court records show Thompson had eight prior DWI convictions and had been charged with leaving the scene of an accident before.

District Attorney Ben David reminds the public the "move over law" is just as important for amber light vehicles as it is for blue light law enforcement vehicles.

He also said that drinking and driving has to stop.

"This is a preventable tragedy," said David.  "People need to stop drinking while they're driving or using any drugs while they're driving because it causes more death and destruction each year on our highways then guns and knives put together."
