SWA celebrates landing in MEM with $50 flights

(WMC-TV) - Southwest Airlines is officially in Memphis and for travelers, that means competitive prices, free checked bags, and for a limited time, round trip tickets for $100.

To celebrate its arrival in the Bluff City, Southwest Airlines is offering up low fares to passengers hoping to take off or land in Memphis.

"In 2013, it is possible to book yourself a flight and have yourself a seat on Southwest Airlines for less money than others charge you for your bag," said Ron Ricks, Southwest Airlines executive vice president.

"Our service is iconic. You've heard it all the time, we have low fares, great customer service, bags fly free," said Don Landson, Southwest Airlines.

Noble Brown said he had not flown out of the Memphis airport for ages because of high rates. Then, he found a deal on Southwest.com.

Debbie Williams, on the other hand, is a longtime Southwest Airlines passenger. She often uses points earned on her Southwest credit card.

"We get the most value out of any of the cards we ever have had," she said.

When you compare Southwest to Delta in Memphis, you'll find savings, from baggage fees to flights. Your first two bags weighing less than 50 pounds are free on Southwest domestic flights. On Delta, the fees start at $25.

Action News 5 browsed some Southwest Airlines flights and compared them to the same flights offered by Delta AirLines.

If you are thinking about flying to Indianapolis to see the Grizzlies in action next Monday, you will find Delta's lowest fare is $977. Southwest's lowest fare is $271.

Southwest now has six flights out of Memphis to five different destinations.

And if you have already tried booking flights on SWA, you probably noticed that it is not an option in the popular flight search engines. You must book directly from Southwest.com.

A current sale celebrating the new service in and out of Memphis offers one-way flights to and from Orlando, Tampa, Houston, Baltimore, and Chicago for $50 between December and February. That means you can get a round trip ticket for $100.

But you must book by November 6, that is when the sale ends.

Memphis also earned a 36-page spread in Southwest Airlines Spirit Magazine in November. To see the article featuring Memphis' most iconic places to stay, sights, and eats, click here: http://www.spiritmag.com/your_adventure_in/article/your_adventure_in_memphis
