SCHP investigates fatal hit-and-run on Hilton Head Island

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

The Beaufort County coroner has released the identity of a body found on Hilton Head Island early Sunday morning.

Officials say 34-year-old Jenny Mercer of Hilton Head was found dead at about 3 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Cordillo Parkway and South Forest Beach Drive near Sea Pines Plantation. The area, a busy intersection, is a popular walking and biking spot.

According to the Beaufort County coroner, it appears Mercer was the victim of a hit-and-run.

"People are so distracted, people who are on vacation, even people who live here don't recognize runners, bikers, walkers. It's dangerous," said Paul Heitmann.

Mercer's body was transported to the medical examiner's office in Charleston for an autopsy. No information on the vehicle that hit Mercer has been released at this time.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating.

If you have any information about this collision or about the vehicle of interest, contact the South Carolina Highway Patrol at 803.896.9621 or 800.768.1506, or you can call Crime Stoppers at 888.CRIME.SC.
