LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

A Laurel mentoring organization teed off its first charity golf tournament on Thursday.

Dozens of businesses and former professional athletes took part in the Ralph Boston/Laurel Ford Charity Golf Tournament. Hosted by S.T.A.R.S and C.H.A.M.PS, the tournament helps the non-profit organization continue mentoring young people in several Laurel schools. Thanks to everyone’s participation, S.T.A.R.S and C.H.A.M.P.S raised more than $17,000.

“This is important so that we can keep the activities and lessons that we present to the children we can keep these things going,” said S.T.A.R.S and C.H.A.M.P.S Executive Director Johnnice Ulmer. “Mr. Boston of course is an Olympic winner and he's always so willing to give back to Laurel. He's always so anxious to come in and help us so this is just his way of giving back to a community that's so dear to him.”

Laurel Ford won first place in Thursday’s tournament.
