Armed robbery suspect captured near police academy

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The suspect in a west Jackson armed robbery has been caught. He was tackled by JPD Deputy Chief Allen White, as he ran beside the Police Training Academy on St. Charles Street at Meyer Avenue.

The armed robber, now identified by police as 23 year old Michael Smith, pulled a gun in the Dollar General Store at 2808 Robinson Road, just west of Westland Plaza shopping center about 8:10 a.m.

When a police officer responded to the robbery, the suspect fired at him.

"Police quickly surrounded the area of west Jackson and went into nearby Camelot Apartments searching for the suspect," said JPD Assistant Chief Lee Vance. "There they found a "hoodie" believed to have been worn by him. A citizen on Santa Rosa Street tipped police that he saw the suspect go behind a shed. It was that tip that led to Deputy Chief Allen White tackling the suspect on the property of the police training academy two blocks away."

Police were very happy they were able to bring this pursuit to a successful conclusion in just under two hours.

Smith is expected to be charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and armed robbery.
