RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The cost of water treatment is resulting in higher water bills in the metro. Now a Rankin County utility authority is challenging the city of Jackson's rate hikes.

The water is not rising, but bills are in several cities. Not one, but four water rate hikes on tens of thousands of residents and businesses in the West Rankin Utility Authority have raised eyebrows.

The  authority is comprised of Brandon, Flowood, Pearl, Richland, the airport, state hospital and a portion of the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District. The lawyer representing the WRUA says no lawsuit has been filed yet, but the city of Jackson was sent a letter of intent to sue.

Keith Turner says the utility has valid claims but hopes to find solutions. Turner said,

"West Rankin is roughly about one third of the flow that goes into the Savannah Street plant," said Turner. "We have concerns about the operation of that plant for the past many years and the management of it over the past many years as far as the cost of the operation."

He also said  the increase in how they are being calculated a concern.

Flowood's Mayor Gary Rhoads in a letter to Jackson authorities complained about the exceptionally high increase in rates. So the capitol city is now on notice that a water war could be on with it's neighbors.

All of it surrounds the cost of treatment for water the utility sends to the city of Jackson. Reportedly 10-11 million gallons a month. Also the cost these Rankin county municipalities have to pay for a portion of the sludge removal project at the Savannah Street facility in south Jackson. Negotiations are currently underway.
