Sunday alcohol in Tifton?

TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

There are two Sunday sales proposals on the ballot in Tifton.  While some say Sunday alcohol sales will bring more business and revenue to the city, others say it will do more harm than good.

Mitch Williams owns The Locker Room Sports Bar, and is all for the sale of alcohol on Sundays.   "Everybody around us has it now. Valdosta, Cordele. Everybody is jumping on the bandwagon  to have sales on Sunday. I guess were just tired of lagging behind," said Williams.

Williams says Sunday sales would help his business and boost the economy.  Right now, The Locker Room is closed on Sunday, and Williams sees no harm in letting people come in and have a drink while they eat and watch football.

"Right now with the economy, everybody likes me their struggling. If this will help, They just allowed us to stay open on Saturdays. So that really helped. And they city commissioners are really trying to help the businesses," said Williams.

If the ordinance passes on November 5th, establishments like The Locker Room Sports Bar will be able to open on Sundays and sell Alcohol.   Williams says he's already voted yes to alcohol, but a lot of people are against the proposal.

"I have seen first hand the harm that alcohol and alcoholism has done to individuals and families and its just a frightening thing that is happening to our society," said Dr. Wayne Roe of the First Baptist Church in Tifton.

Roe says adding another day of alcohol sales will have damaging effects. "I just believe Sunday is a different day. It doesn't need to be like every other day of the week. It was created to give us a day of rest, worship and reflection."

Dr. Roe worries that if this referendum passes, the next thing on the ballot will be liquor stores in the city.  Voters will have two questions concerning Sunday alcohol sales. The first is liquor by the drink in restaurants and the second is the sale of beer and wine in Retail stores.

Election Day is next Tuesday.  Early voting continues through Friday.
