Gadsden business, city leaders discuss Sunday liquor sales

GADSDEN, AL (WBRC) -

People who want to have a beer with their meals can do so six days a week in Gadsden. But on Sundays, they have to drive about 40 miles to Anniston or Weaver.

Some business leaders are starting to suggest changing that would bring more business to Gadsden.

"We had an overwhelming positive response on that, almost 63 percent voted in favor of a referendum seven day sales," Heather New with the Gadsden Area Chamber of Commerce said.

Area business leaders say four national chains have already rejected Gadsden as a location for their restaurants, just because Gadsden doesn't have Sunday liquor sales. That's why they're requesting a referendum on the matter.

But local members of the legislature would likely have to approve it first. State Senator Phil Williams is among three legislators who say they oppose the idea.

However, Williams said over the phone on Monday that he's still gathering data and listening to his constituents.

Business leaders say they'd at least like to see a vote on it.
