The Albany Humane Society is getting a makeover thanks to some help from a national humanitarian group and national dog food company.
The Georgia Forestry Department reported 11 forest fires in Dougherty County in 2013, a significant drop from previous years. At Monday's county commission meeting, Chief Forest Ranger Tom Lambert attributed the decrease to excess rain for most of the year and educational campaigns on safe burning practices.Lambert said only 48 acres were damaged by fire over the year. He said slow years usually have more than 20 fires, which can damage hundreds of acres. He said humidity levels have dropped in recent weeks, and stressed safe burning practices for controlled burns. Call the county's Georgia Forestry Department office at (229) 430-5122 for safety tips or more information on permits required for controlled burns, or visit www.gatrees.org.
