DUI suspect gets 15 years for hitting construction worker

MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) -

A drunk driver charged with hitting a construction worker in Mt. Pleasant two years ago has been sentenced to 15 years behind bars, according to court records.

Daniel Hamrick, 36, was sentenced Friday on charges of felony DUI resulting in great bodily injury.

Authorities say Hamrick hit a Banks Construction worker on Highway 17 North on November 14, 2011 around 3:30 a.m. The worker was pushed into an asphalt spreading machine, resulting in life-threatening injuries.

The victim suffered numerous facial and skull fractures, as well a traumatic brain injury that left him with limited brain function. He is also unable to walk or talk.

Police say Hamrick admitted to drinking a pint of beer before getting behind the wheel. His blood alcohol content was approximately twice the legal limit, officials say.

Hamrick was convicted of driving under suspension in 1995, and DUI in 2002, records state.
