KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Ridley Scott's latest movie The Counselor is a stark view of some incredibly poor decisions as they play out. Written by Cormac McCarthy, the same man who wrote the novels No Country for Old Men and The Road, The Counselor is another very bleak story with virtually no light at the end of the tunnel.

Starring a powerhouse cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt, the movie follows a greedy lawyer played by Fassbender. No real name is given to our central character, and while the dialogue never gets too specific about the shady dealings going on, it's completely obvious from the get-go that only bad things will come. This being a story by McCarthy, that's exactly what we get.

After setting the events of a massive drug deal that begins in Mexico, Fassbender's Counselor soon finds himself powerless to a rash of betrayal and danger. He's gone ahead with his plan in hopes of setting up the perfect life with Laura (Cruz). Pretty much from the very beginning, things continually spiral out of control for our antagonist.

The ensemble cast, for the most part, do an excellent job of giving these characters life. One of the standout performances, however, goes to Cameron Diaz, who plays Malkina. She is a ruthless sociopath willing to go some insane lengths to get what she wants, destroying lives along the way to rise in power. She is terrifying in the role, and shows just how over the top she can go in a particular scene involving a Ferrari.

Overall, Scott's new crime drama is an intense crime drama that's an incredibly twisted and bleak movie, but still manages to squeeze some seriously dark humor. It won't leave you feeling bright and sunny, but the movie will have you talking once the credits roll.
