WORTH CO., GA (WALB) -

A three year old Worth County girl is recovering at the burn center in Augusta after falling into a fire at a home on Green Valley Road Thursday afternoon.

Worth County Law Enforcement say the best thing you can do to protect your child around fire is to keep a close eye on them at all times.

"The little girl was playing with sticks throwing sticks into the fire and fell in the fire," said Worth Co. Sheriff Jeff Hobby.

The family tried to transport the girl to Phoebe Putney Hospital in Albany but they stopped at Antioch Church on Highway 313 for immediate help. "When they got to Antioch they realized that they needed to call 911 and get an ambulance to meet them at Antioch Baptist Church," said the sheriff.

Worth County Sheriff Jeff Hobby says the girl had several burns across her body. "She did have some burns on her body, as far as deep burns, I don't know if she's gonna have any deep burns, but she was burned across her body pretty good."

He encourages parents to keep a close eye on children around fires. "When you got small children around, you gotta burn pile going you need to watch them and keep them away from it, because it don't take just a few minutes for something to happen, few seconds really."

The toddler was airlifted to an Augusta burn center where she is currently recovering. The Sheriff says he does not know the girl's name and the incident report from the detective who is looking into the case wasn't available.

The Sheriff's Office continues to look into what happened. We're still working to get the little girl's name and we'll follow her recovery.
