ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Downtown Albany leaders say the Flint River could soon be used to attract more outdoor enthusiasts to the city.

The Albany-Dougherty Inner City Authority hopes to build two kayak and canoe launch points in the Riverfront Park within the next few weeks.  Another would be placed near the Georgia Power Dam.

They've been working to get permits in place for the last year.  Their last one was from the Department of Natural Resources about a month ago.

"When we're talking to outfitters and people, whether it's Darton College or Flint Riverquarium, people that utilize the river a lot right now, the excitement levels is pretty high," said Aaron Blair, Downtown Manager.  So I think it'll spur not only additional tourism, but also hopefully some economic development."

Blair said the county must approve the plans before construction can begin.  He said the river is currently at the lowest point of the year, which is an ideal time to build.

He estimates the ramps will cost about $75,000 each.
