City okays WW II memorial

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

World War II veterans will soon have place of honor in downtown Albany.

The American Legion raised $19,000 to build a 19-foot by 11-foot granite memorial. Tuesday night, Albany City Commissioners formally approved a location for the monument in Veterans Park across the street from the Civic Center.

Mayor Dorothy Hubbard said, "To me it just shows that we respect what they did and the fact that many of them lost their lives fighting for the freedoms we enjoy and freedoms we take for granted."

American Legion leaders hope to start work on the monument soon. They plan to dedicate it on November 11th, Veterans Day.
