MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A new program in the Binghampton area is taking teens and children off of the streets and channeling their energy into art that is on display now for everyone to see.

Middle school students are carrying out a plan to brighten up Binghampton, while showcasing their talents at the same time.

"The coke and the M&M's , chicken, burger, and the grapes," Lester Middle School student Diondius Wooten described the walls of a building in Binghampton.

The students have been spending their Saturdays painting murals to brighten the community.

"It helps the community and keeps us out of trouble," added Donte Davis, Lester Middle School student.

"There's so much untapped talent in Binghampton, so having them come and paint, this is their portfolio. These streets are their portfolio," said Meghean Warner, Carpenter Art Garden.

Meghean Warner volunteers with the Carpenter Art Garden, which is the students' only access to art instruction.

A weekend project to mural one Tillman street wall turned into two, then four, with more in the works.

"Basically this whole intersection is going to be murals," said Warner. "We're just going to keep painting to we run out if wall space."

Over the past month of painting, the students say they have learned a lot about art, teamwork, and community. But Warner suggests that they may be doing more teaching than they are even aware of... and that perhaps everyone else has more to learn from the students.

"These kids have taught be so much about what it means to love Memphis and invest here. I think they're a prime example of that," said Warner.

If you want to help, the students could always use supplies. To find out how you can donate to their brightening of Binghampton, click here: http://www.bdcmemphis.org
