Former Richmond Co. deputy tased, arrested at Augusta nightclub

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

A former Richmond County Sheriff's deputy and Columbia County code enforcement officer is facing charges after an incident early Sunday at an Augusta nightclub.

Deputies say Jimmy Vowell, 52, got into an argument with the owner of Coyote's Nightclub on Peach Orchard Road.

A deputy asked Vowell to leave, but he wouldn't, according to the sheriff's office. Another deputy told Vowell he was going to be arrested and to put his hands on the car, but Vowell pushed the deputy's arm.

The deputy then tased Vowell in the chest, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies found a 9mm handgun in Vowell's waistband, according to the sheriff's office.

Vowell is charged with obstruction of a law enforcement officer and carrying deadly weapons in an unauthorized location.

Vowell was fired last year from his job as a Columbia County code enforcement officer after Columbia County commissioners say he entered a woman's home without her consent.
