SYLVESTER, GA (WALB) -

On Wednesday, schools, businesses and the entire Worth County community will be decked out in pink in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The effort was spear-headed by Sharon Lyles, whose mother and grandmother were both diagnosed with breast cancer.

"I want to bring awareness to the cause through faith, awareness and determination," Lyles said. "I'm fighting for a cure."

Each year, the city of Sylvester participates in the Relay for Life to raise funds for breast cancer research but this is the first time the city will participate in an October effort.

The ribbon that many will wear is pink and blue. The blue was chosen to illuminate the fact that men can be diagnosed with breast cancer as well.

"Men have cancer too and we do tend to just let that slip by and not think about it ," said Barbara Tucker owner of Barnyard Creations in downtown Sylvester. "But it's true."

The Cancer Society says nearly 50,000 Georgians will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.

Lyles will hold an Breast Cancer Awareness session at First African Baptist Church this Sunday on West Pope Road in Sylvester.
