ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Under a financial strain that's lasted years now, and with future funding due for reductions, Chehaw Park announced Monday that it will restructure its staffing picture.

The park will eliminate the positions zoo director, currently held by Kevin Hils, and that of marketing and development director, now held by Tonya Hart. The eliminations take place immediately.

Chehaw issued this news release Monday-

The Chehaw Park Authority announced today that it is restructuring its organization and eliminating two key positions. This is being done to reduce operating expenses and strengthen the financial position of the organization.

"These are challenging times for all businesses," says Park Authority Chair, Scott Kemp. "We already know that the City will begin reductions in our funding in less than two years, and the business side of our operation must be prepared for those and for other economic challenges."

The Park's annual budget is approximately $1.8 million and the Board is planning immediate reductions of 10%. Since personnel, as in most organizations, is the largest single expense; that area is where a majority of the reductions will come. The initial changes are at the management level and designed so as not to directly impact animal care or the daily operation of the Park.

"Chehaw is an important public asset for our region", Kemp says. "We rely heavily on public support both from tax dollars and from our generous donors. It is important that the community know that by taking action now, we are being responsible stewards of public funds and assuring the long-term viability of this community asset."
