GCSO, DEA hosting prescription drug take-back

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – The Georgetown County Sheriff's Office and Drug Enforcement Administration are joining forces once again to host a prescription drug take-back on Saturday, October 26.

The take-back will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Midway Fire and Rescue in Pawleys Island. This is the seventh time in three years an event of this nature has been held, in an effort to prevent pill abuse and theft by allowing citizens to rid their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.

Any drugs turned over will be done anonymously and without any questions asked.

Last  April, Americans turned in 371 tons of prescription drugs at over 5,800 sites. In the six previous take-back events, DEA and its partners received over 2.8 million pounds (more than 1,400 tons) of pills.

The GCSO says that studies show a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, and rates of prescription drug abuse in America are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to them.
