Low country boil benefits downtown church

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Dozens of people were at the Thronateeska Heritage Center Saturday night for a low country boil, and auction. Saturday's proceeds benefit the Albany First Presbyterian Church downtown.

Organizers say the event will help pay off a loan the church took out to help keep the church doors open.

At one time, the church was in danger of closing, but now members say the church is strong, and they look forward to continuing to serve people in the downtown area.

"We had  a lot of people come out that aren't even from our church. There are a lot of people here that I don't even recognize but they're here to support us and they see the importance of having a church in downtown so it can help take care of the needs of that area," says Jud Savelle, the church chairman.

Savelle says they've raised at least $3,000, not including auction items.
