Alabama flattens Arkansas, 52-0

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Alabama kept Arkansas out of the football game on Saturday as the Tide shut out the Razorbacks, 52-0.

Alabama received the ball at the beginning of the game and began a steady, methodical push towards the endzone. The 12-play drive covered 68 yards. An A.J. McCarron pass to Jalston Fowler for a 4-yard touchdown. Cade Foster's kick was good.

The Tide defense stepped in and kept Arkansas to -4 yards on their first possession and the Razorback punt allowed Alabama to take over the ball at the Arkansas 38. The next play saw McCarron land a pass in the arms of Amari Cooper for 22-yards. A series of rushes by Kenyan Drake hammered down the Arkansas defense with Drake pushing through for a 1-yard touchdown.

In the second quarter, Alabama added two more touchdowns and kept the Razorbacks out of the endzone. A 5-play drive across 84 yards added the Tide's 3rd touchdown. They opened the series with a 27-yard rush by T.J. Yeldon and got the score on a Kenyan Drake rush for 46 yards. Arkansas followed the score with a hard-fought drive, but it went wrong when a field goal attempt from the Alabama 23 was blocked. 5 plays later, Alabama's Amari Cooper caught a textbook pass for a 30-yard touchdown. The teams went to the locker room with a score of 28-0.

A fumble on the kickoff provided an opportunity to Alabama to add more to the scoreboard. The fumble, by Keon Hatcher, was recovered by Eddie Jackson at the Arkansas 30 yard line. Three plays later, McCarron connected with O.J. Howard for a 17-yard touchdown. Foster tacked on the extra point.

The Crimson Tide continued their assault on their next possession. In 8 plays, Alabama covered 72 yards. T.J. Yeldon capped off the drive with a 24-yard drive at the 8:18 mark in the 3rd. In the following Arkansas possession, an interception by Cyrus Jones allowed the Tide to go for a few more points. The drive fell short and Cade Foster took the field and landed a 48-yard field goal to bring the score to 45-0.

The 4th quarter saw many of Alabama's backup players take the field. 3rd string running back Derrick Henry even found a chance to score with a breakout 80-yard touchdown. Adam Griffith's extra point set the score at 52-0.

Next week, Alabama hosts Tennessee at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.

LSU went back to work this week in preparation for the Citrus Bowl against Notre Dame. A win would be nice, but this is also a chance to get some freshman playing time to get ready for 2018. Well it'll come in practice only. "Those guys will get more reps. So I'll give them a couple of more reps at the end of a team period. It's sending the wrong message to our football team.
