ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Students, faculty, and staff say President Sireno has done a lot to expand Darton's campus, but word of his resignation Friday came as a shock to the campus community.

"Yeah I'm definitely in shock, just because it is the middle of the semester and you know that he is our president at the end of the day" said Demartino McQueen, Darton student.

In a letter to foundation trustees, President Sireno said "Early yesterday afternoon Chancellor Huckaby informed me that he and the board of regents have decided that new leadership is needed at Darton State college." Later in that letter to foundation trustees Sireno goes forth and says:

"Many exciting changes and challenges are in store for Darton State in the months and years ahead, among them a merger."

In response to Dr. Sireno's comment regarding the consolidation of Darton College, the University system office of Georgia release the following statement saying.

"No decision has been made to consolidate Darton State College and the Board of Regents has not discussed this issue with Sireno."

WALB tried to speak with President Sireno Friday, one of WALB reporters caught up with President Sireno while he was in his office clearing out some of his personal belongings, he said he wouldn't go on camera with WALB Friday, but he released this statement.

"I've enjoyed the ride here at Darton State College, it's been a great 24 years," said Sireno.

Roger Marietta a professor of Political Science couldn't go on camera Friday because he was out of town, but he spoke with WALB by phone praising president Sireno's leadership.

"Our campus has grown with new facilities and our athletic teams are much more improved and more numerous and academically we're a four year college now, where we were a community college before," said Roger Marietta, professor, Darton State College.

For now the Darton campus has to adjust to the changes that are taking place.
