ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

On Saturday, a routine system  check caused a nationwide problem for people enrolled in the SNAP, or food stamps program, and using EBT cards.

Many people, including Albany residents, could not use their cards . Some stores including Dollar Tree  posted signs outside to alert customers of the inconvenience.

Xerox, who is the vendor for the EBT system, now says SNAP and other programs have been restored to the 17 states where Xerox provides EBT services.

In a statement from Xerox, they say during a routine test of their back up systems on Saturday , the system experienced a temporary shutdown.

While the system came back on, people in 17 states started experiencing problems with their cards. Representatives say they are investigating to find the cause of the issue.
