ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Exchange Club of Southwest Georgia honored the Dougherty County Firefighters and EMS Paramedic of the year Friday.

There were two Albany Firefighters of the year honored. Captain Tony Denby and Firefighter Derrick Eldridge in February fought their way into a burning house on Johnson Road and carried out a woman overcome by smoke.....saving her life. They then returned to put out the fire before other firefighters arrived.

The Exchange Club of Southwest Georgia each year honors first responders in Albany and Dougherty County for their service.

The Dougherty County EMS paramedic of the year for 2013 is Cedric Powell.  Officials say Powell at the risk of his own life went into an East Albany home and started treating a gunshot victim before even Police had arrived.

Cedric Powell, Tony Denby, and Derrick Eldridge received plaques and a check from the Exchange Club for being named Firefighters and paramedic of the year.
