GSW plaza named for former president Capitan

AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

Georgia Southwestern State University and the GSW Foundation dedicated the plaza of the institution to its eighth president, Dr. William H. Capitan, who served from 1979 to 1995, Wednesday.

The Capitan Plaza includes a commemorative bronze plaque, benches, trees and flowers planted specifically for the area.

Under Capitan, GSW saw a growth in academic and external programing, new construction, and enrollment. New degrees under his leadership included the Bachelor of Fine Arts; the Bachelor of Science in computer information systems, computer science, and computer science technology and an expanded Bachelor of Business Administration degree.

Enrollment in Fall 1995 reached its highest point since 1975 under his guidance. Capitan was also instrumental in establishing the GSW Foundation and the Rosalynn Carter Institute .

Formerly of Americus, Capitan and his wife currently reside in St. Simons Island, Ga.

    A man who was convicted of a sex crime in 2006 was placed in the Coffee County jail Tuesday, because he violated the terms of his parole, with his sex offender status.

    The Ben Hill-Irwin Campus of Wiregrass Technical College in Fitzgerald invites everyone to a a Career Expo Thursday morning, June 22,  from 10:30 AM until 1:30PM. The location is the Charles Harris Learning Center, at 667 Perry House Road, in Fitzgerald. The sponsors,  Wiregrass Career Services, Georgia Dept. of Labor, and Wiregrass’ Veterans say that all are welcome, including students, graduates, and the general public.
